Abu Kafan is a reef of 300 meters long and means 'the deep one' obviously referring to the very steep walls which plummet several hundreds of meters into the deep at all sides. Others say it means 'father of fans' which could also be true as it refers to the many fans in this area. Divers often dive this area as a drift dive from north to south.
In the north are some beautiful black coral formations and a huge resident school of barracudas. The wall here is literally a vertical drop-off to 110 meters. The south has bigger chances of seeing sharks such as hammerheads in late spring and manta rays in winter. At the southern most point is a small solitude erg which is nice to explore before returning back. Pelagic action such as tuna, trevally, barracuda and sharks can be seen everywhere out in the blue next to these fantastic walls. It is also an area to encounter dolphins.
