The dive potential of the Straits of Tiran, the narrow sea passages between the Sinai and the Arabian peninsula, is enorm. With four great offshore reefs, excellent scuba diving conditions and plenty of dive schools, diving the Straits of Tiran is without doubt a must on each diver's list.

The Straits of Tiran is separating the Red Sea from the Gulf of Aqaba and named after barren Tiran Island in the middle. Here we can find four reefs next to each other, visible from the surface, which are called Gordon, Woodhouse, Thomas and Jackson Reef, named after the person that mapped it. This opening to the Red Sea is the reason that currents around the reefs and steep drop offs are strong and require good diving skills. It is also the reason for their world famous diversity of coral and abundant fish life and for its drift diving potential.

The water temperature is nice at 20 degrees in winter (February) to 27 degrees in summer (early October). The Egyptian Climate is hot and dry, ranging from 40 degrees in summer to 20 in winter. Diving can be done year around, with visibilities between 20 and 60 meters.

Big fish such as sharks, turtles, barracuda's, manta rays and eagle rays are frequent visitors. But you will also see huge schools of fish such as jacks, snappers and bat fish. The real reason to go though are the high numbers of ship wrecks that sank in this area. If you are a ship wreck fanatic, diving Tiran is a must.
