Fanous Reef, Fanus Reef, El Fanous and Torfa Fanous are all names of seperate small sections at the north side of big giftun island. El Fanous means reef with a beacon or lighthouse and forms a horseshoe shaped lagoon, which is perfectly calm for boats to moor. Inside the lagoon is not much to see so try to explore the outer walls and pinnacles.

On the west side, better known as Fanous West, are a few rocky boulders and pinnacles which are well worth exploring while the east side (Fanous East) has a very interesting outer reef wall. Try to do a drift dive here enjoying all the marine life you will meet along this beautiful wall. El Fanous is also called Dolphin Reef so keep an eye out at all times for these amazing smart creatures. You will also see octopus, glassfish, all types of banner and butterfly fish, morays and triggerfish. Enjoy this narrow and small reef as it is one of the nearest and most visited dive sites near Hurghada.

This was our first dive in more than 17 months. It was Brigitte's 6th dive and she was worrying about all kinds of things, but mostly about not remembering what she had learned in Belize. She bumped up and down a bit, but then again it has been a while ago so we considered it our refreshment dive. The main sight was a huge blue-spotted stingray.

Take a look at all the pictures!
