Shark Bay lies directly in front of the Shark Bay Camp and Dive Center. Unfortunately consider yourself very lucky if you see any sharks here. Shark Bay got its name because it used to be the unloading place for shark fishermen. There are many crevices and some overhangs full of red coralfish. These fish which can be found all over the Red Sea have given the sea its name according to some. Mantas occasionally come into the bay in summer to feed on the enormous amounts of plankton that accumulates here. Unfortunately this is also true for rubbish which can be found in kilogram’s at shore.
Once in the water you will come across many terraces of sandy ledges descending gradually. To the south is a steep canyon which provides for some excellent photo opportunities. Because of its many sandy patches it is also a famous night and training dive site where skills can be tested. At night morays, octopus, shrimp, hermit crabs, squid and lionfish all live their lives. Flatfish, rays, crocodile fish, groupers and wrasses can be seen as well, but it is not the best day dive site you can do in this area.
