Ras Abu Helal or Little Canyon has a very interesting translation as it means Headland of the Crescent Moon. And that is what it is. It is a moon shaped reef that encircles some stunning and quite shallow lagoons. Some of the best coral formations and coral gardens can be found outside it. At its northern end is a broad ridge full of marine life. There is also a very narrow canyon which starts at 30 meters deep and has exit points well beyond the sport diving limits. Only enter with a cave specialty and technical diving equipment as she is twisted, very deep and experienced navigators have been lost here.
Diving here is often done as a drift from Abu Telhar also named the Huts. She is also often used as a night dive when all the night creatures come out and show their faces. Of course it is also possible to enter by shore near a small sign that says 'zone de plongee'. Current can be strong and sea waves can be high which doesn't provide for an easy entry. The different species of coral as well as fish are spectacular. Some common examples are groupers, unicorns, wrasses, cods, hawksbill and puffers.
