Dive site Gamul Kebir starts at the southwest side of its horseshoe-shaped reef as this is the place where most boats moor. The best place to dive is at the north unsheltered side where there are five small ergs to explore, but to get there you have to dive around the corner of the reef out of the lagoon. The ergs are covered in soft corals and swarmed with small fish. The sand in between them is perfect for stingrays and sand rays. The current, mostly running from the north, give rise to a shoal of resident barracudas and sometimes a few nurse sharks. This is also the reason it is sometimes called Barracuda House.
Safaga Island or locally named Gamul can mean several things. In Arabic it can mean 'beautiful large', while it can also be named after the Hebrew meaning of Gamul, which is camel. During winter it is often impossible to dive at these places as the strong northern wind makes mooring for boats impossible.
