This British passenger and mail ship struck the reef here in September 1869 because of navigational errors. The Carnatic has a length of 90 meters and is by far the oldest of the wrecks located here at Sha’ab Abu Nuhas. It is said that she was carrying gold bullion of a value of forty thousand pounds sterling. She is also often referred to as the 'wine' wreck, because of the many bottles of wine that originally where in the cargo holds. Not many remain unfortunately.

The hull is fully covered in coral and many species of fish are seen near the wreck. Glassfish, morays, groupers and jacks are some of the more common and many think this is the best wreck of the four.
