The Greek freighter Giannis D with a size of over 100 meters of length is one of the biggest to be found here at Sha'ab Abu Nuhas. It was a cargo ship which was originally build in Japan and named the Shoyo Maru. Then in 1975 she was sold and renamed to Markos and this name can still be found at the vessels hull. In 1980 it got its actual name the Giannis D when it was sold again to a Greek company. The Greek used it for transporting wood when, in April 1983, it was on a trip from Croatia to Saudi Arabia and sank when it hit the reef. It took two weeks for the ship to break into two and sink. The nearby small reef is also called Woodvalley Reef, because the current transported many of the pieces of wood here. The wreck is now roughly separate in three sections, which are the bows, amidships, and stern and lying sort of parallel to the reef.

Some interesting parts that can be explored are the stern. There is a place where you can penetrate the wreck going all the way up where there is a part of trapped air. Be careful not to disorientate because of the strange angle the ship is in. Finishing the dive is often done by inspecting the mast very thoroughly. You can dive all the way up the mast which lies only 4 meters below the surface and make a great safety stop.

Fish life is not the main reason to go here, but many glassfish, angelfish and scorpionfish can be seen on the wreck. There is also one returning big resident Napoleon wrasse.
